In with the old… quilt pattern that is! Free charm & jelly roll quilt pattern~

I’ve been feeling a little uninspired lately and have had trouble figuring out what I wanted to post. Writers have writer’s block I was having quilter’s block! And then it hit me- I’ve designed oh I don’t know, about a hundred or so patterns for the shop and I’ve only shared a couple dozen on my blog. Who says I can’t start posting them for all of you to enjoy and use. What good are they doing hiding out in My Documents?! So, here is the first one: “Strips & Squares”. One of my favorite things about this quilt was that I used up a ton of my stashed 2 1/2″ strips to complete it. I also love the muted color palate.

This pattern is also a great for using up charm squares and jelly roll strips. So, now that I’ve given myself permission to dig through some old designs look for another pattern in a couple weeks!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Bay Window Quilt Shop! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Here in Minnesota we are all hoping for a white Christmas. It’s not here yet, but I’m pretty sure we’ll have it soon. We can’t go much longer without snow.

Here is Jack at Perham’s Holiday Parade of Lights. There really is nothing like Christmas through the eyes of a child. He can’t wait for it to be Christmas!

I am delighted to have my pattern, “Playing Tag” published in a national magazine! Look for the instructions to this unique stroller quilt in the Winter Issue of Quilts & More by American Patchwork & Quilting. We are of course selling kits for both the boy and girl colorways on our website or in the shop. Be sure to check them out!

If you are looking for a very quick and easy table runner pattern take a look at “Easy Nines” in the Table Runner Patterns section of the blog. You can create a runner and centerpiece from your yardage requirements. Or you’ll find that it is a great way to use up scraps.

Finally, here is a cute photo of Jack, Izzy, and I enjoying one of our early fall days. It was so warm you will notice we don’t even have shoes on! She also decided it was more fun to use Jack’s boots for stuffing leaves into instead of having him wear them.

The countdown has begun to Little One!

Any day now my second line of fabric will be arriving in our shop! I am so excited to share it with all of you, and can’t wait for it to officially be here. “Little One” features two color stories: boy & girl (with the boy color story also the neutral one for those of you who don’t know if it will be a boy or girl). I have designed a bib panel and a collection of prints including cute rattles, stars, and dots.

I am the most excited to share my series of FREE BABY QUILT PATTERNS that I’ve called the “9 Months til Baby” program. In essence, I have designed 9 different projects that you can make for baby. And yes, a baby does need 9 different things! Each of the projects serves it’s own purpose. Getting Started in projects 1-3 is the Bibs with Add-itude, Soft Blocks, and Wrist Rattles. You can make all of these projects from one Little One Fat Quarter Bundle.

Currently I am addicted to making the soft blocks. They are so easy and they really use up my scraps!

Projects 4-6 are “Growing Fast” and include a Growth Chart, Stroller Quilt, and Appliqued Onesies. I had a blast creating the rick-rack bottom on the onesie. It looks so cute on Izzy!

The Stroller Quilt is great for keeping baby entertained. Just clip a couple toys or the paci onto the quilt using those toy rings. It works great! And, you can make projects 4-6 from just one Little One Fat Quarter Bundle. You just need to add a little solid fabric for the Growth Chart plus Binding and Backing on the Stroller Quilt.

Project 7 is an adorable Welcome Baby Banner. When I designed it, I was envisioning seeing it hanging outside the house when mom and baby came home from the hospital. Then, I would hang it in the nursery. To personalize it, you can add baby’s information to the back of the handmade fabric tag. Include name, date of birth, height, weight, time, etc… What a fun keepsake that you could use for more than one child. Just make a new tag for each kid!

Or, you can also make it without the tag!

Welcome Baby Banner Instructions

Hopscotch is pattern #8 in the series. This is a fun quilt that reminds me of grade-school and playing hopscotch during recess. I wanted to create something unique and more modern for the line with this pattern. You can’t even tell it is a baby quilt unless you look closely at the fabrics. My mom gave me the idea to actually use it for playing hopscotch. I’m sure my son Jack, who is almost 4, would think that is a great idea!

And finally Little Star Quilt is the last of the 9 patterns. With this project I wanted to show that you can cut the bib panel apart and use it as blocks in a quilt. Either of the quilts can be made from one Little One Fat Quarter Bundle plus yardage for the Solid star points. So, you can choose if you want a scrappy border or not. The larger size is great for a play quilt on the floor!

The girl version features the optional scrappy border.

Quick Quilt Pattern- Around The Block!

Where has the time gone? I can’t believe it has been 2 months since my last post! Hopefully, this quick and easy quilt pattern will make up for my absence! I designed Around the Block to use up some of my cherished Alexander Henry fabrics that were in my stash. One piece in particular is this tea party fabric that I purchased about 5 years ago with the hope of having a daughter someday. I know Izzy & Jack will love having tea parties, and we’ll use this quilt as our tablecloth or picnic blanket.

Spring Quilt Market 2011

We’re back! We had a fantastic time at International Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. We found lots of great stuff, chatted with our favorite quilty friends, and I debuted my new line of fabric “Little One”. Here is the scoop:

We started our Market experience with the Schoolhouse Series on Thursday. I was glad to have my session early in the morning. It is always nice to be done early so that I could attend some of the other sessions in the afternoon. Here is a look at me teaching- thanks Fat Quarter Shop for your awesome Twitter updates & photos of my session!

I had a full room! My mom even said they were standing in the hallway to listen! Yippee- it is great feeling all that love from those in attendance.

Here my mom is holding up a quilt from the girl version of my line. Look for 9 Free Patterns on the Robert Kaufman website in August 2011.

Right after my session we headed down to the ballroom to deliver my quilts to the people at Robert Kaufman, and on the way we got a text saying my sister Maggy had just had her baby! Here is August Philip Doll-

It was pretty hard for my mom to be so far away when grandchild #3 arrived!

The next day I started out my morning with an interview by Sharon Pederson for The Quilt Show with Alex & Ricky. You can watch for the video on www.thequiltshow.com and look under The Daily Blog. It is not posted yet, but should be sometime in the next couple weeks. I will send out an email when it is posted!

When the show opened at 9:30 I met my mom at our first appointment: Hoffman Fabrics. Here she is with our rep, Myra sorting through the batiks we are going to order!

After that we were on to our appointment at P&B Fabrics where we picked up this beautiful contemporary line of fabric: Gallery Fiori. Look for it this September.

In the afternoon we spent a delightful hour with Kaye England in the Wilmington Prints booth. Here she and my mom are showcasing her new quilt: English Lane.

We also spent some time with a few of the Westminster/Free Spirit designers. Here I am with Amy Butler in her beautiful booth. She always has the most inspiring designs and she is a lovely person to chat with!

Right behind Amy’s booth was Anna Maria Horner’s. She always has the most interesting ideas in her booth. This Market she was releasing embroidery sets and her new line LouLouThi. Very cool!

And surprisingly, my mom fell in love with one of the lines we saw. It was Silent Cinema by Jenean Morrison. I actually met Jenean while waiting in line earlier in the week so it was great to be able to buy her fabric too.

In the afternoon we headed to our Moda appointment. Their theme for Market was “Country Fair” and we loved the sock monkeys in the ferris wheel!

After we ordered we also got to spin the wheel to see what prize we won: it was a charm pack!

On Saturday our plan was to walk the floor and visit all of the booths we didn’t see the day before. One of our early stops was the ladies from Bird Brain Designs. We loaded up on lots of new dish towel patterns and a great new product for transferring your pattern by Sulky.

One of the most exciting stops for me was PinPeddlers. Starting in June we will be launching a new rewards program with charms. Stay tuned….

We were also really excited to see Heather Mulder Peterson’s new book Livin Large 2. We have sold SO MANY of her original book Livin Large, we just can’t wait to start making models from this book! When we were in the booth ordering Heather was out so we thought we’d feature her husband Joel instead:

Then, just before we left Heather came back to the booth so here she is in front of a few quilts from the book. She is also showing off her new line of prints.

We chatted with Gudrun of GE Designs for awhile. She has a new book with Kansas City Star that is quite good!

And, Kari Carr of New Leaf Stitches will have her first book out this summer! Congrats!

One of our favorite new designers was Sarah Jane for Michael Miller. She is introducing an adorable line of kid’s prints.

We also fell in love with this winter line of prints from Maywood Studios, Fresh Fallen Snow.

Then, as we were ordering it the designer, Kris Lammers, just happened to be walking by!

Quilt Market would not be complete without a visit to Pearl Louise Designs. Here we are admiring her new winter line.

Two of the most talked about things for my mom at market were the brand new Pellon display that we ordered.

And, that we met Cathy Rigby in the Quilting Treasures booth promoting the Peter Pan fabrics. She was utterly delightful!!

And that was it! We flew home on Sunday and hit the ground running Monday morning.

Caroline’s Courthouse Quilt Pattern~

What a busy month! I’ve just spent the past 3 weeks preparing all of my projects for the Quilt Market release of my new line of fabric, “Little One” for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. I can’t wait to share pictures of all of the 9 different projects that I designed for the line… but you’ll have to wait a little while longer. In the meantime, here is a quick look at the soft blocks that I created from a few of the prints. I was trying to get Isabelle to sit nicely with the blocks, but she had a different idea in mind! Every time I would get her and the blocks in the shot she would hit one of them across the room.

Jack was trying to help, and in the end he offered to have me take a picture of him instead. I agreed that he would be a much more agreeable model!

Needless to say, I haven’t had time to create a new quilt pattern. So, I decided to go through my retired patterns and post that instead. Here is Caroline’s Courthouse, an easy courthouse step quilt pattern. It is named after my sister, Caroline. Enjoy!

Sweet & Simple Charm Quilt pattern!

Let’s Sew!! I love it when I can put together a quilt top in an afternoon! My trick~ using pre-cut charm squares in half of the quilt and keeping the rest of the design very simple. The only cutting you need to do is for the rectangles and they’re big besides! So, head to your stash (or your favorite quilt store) and find some charm packs that you have laying around. Then, add 3/4 of a yard of two other fabrics and get ready to sew!!

In my quilt I featured the new Moda Fabric line Chrysalis. Then, for a funky twist I decided to put a Robert Kaufman fabric on the back! I love it- totally unexpected. PS. the binding will be added as soon as I post this pattern. I just couldn’t wait to share it with all of you!

“Sweethearts” Table Runner or Wall Quilt- Charm School Lesson 3

As my son Jack declares on almost a daily basis, “Christmas is over, sigh”. Yes Christmas is indeed over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited for the next holiday on the calendar. Valentines day is one of those holidays that can easily be overlooked when it comes to decorating, so I wanted to come up with something that wasn’t red and white. Brown and pink was the first thing that came to mind! I also wanted it to be really easy to finish. If you can finish it in an afternoon, it sure makes it more fun! So, here is the “Sweethearts” Table Runner or Wall Quilt.

This is a quick and easy pattern that you can make up from your stash. The hearts are made from placing fusible web on a pieced four patch. I love how they all turn out a little different and it looks harder to piece than it actually is. I plan to frame the wall quilt for a more polished look. But, you could also use a heart quilt hanger.
